The Saturday Night Ghost Club: Halloween Surprise Cake

The Saturday Night Ghost Club is October’s book club read. It grapples with spooky stories, trauma, and memories.

I decided to make a Halloween surprise cake filled with Halloween candy. You can use any candy you like, I decided to use Reese Pieces Peanut, M&M’s, and Smarties.

Halloween Surprise Cake Recipe

Ingredients

  • Your favourite chocolate cake recipe

  • 3 cups of vanilla buttercream

  • Halloween candy of your choice

  • Purple, orange, and green food colouring

Method:

  1. Make the cake according to instructions. Divide cake batter into thirds. Bake the cake for a little less than the instructions say. Keep an eye on the cake to make sure it doesn’t burn.

  2. Divide the buttercream into thirds. Add a drop or two of the food colouring to each portion so you’re left with a bowl of orange icing, purple icing, and green icing.

  3. Once the cake is cooled cut a two inch hole in the centre of two of the cakes.

  4. Ice one of the cake rings with the purple icing, stack the second ring on top and ice with green icing.

  5. There should be a hole in the centre of the cake. Pour your Halloween candy in the hole and place the third cake layer on top.

  6. Ice the top with the orange icing and decorate.
